My Blog Title: The untold the retold
From [www.chinahighlights.com]: In the Three Kingdoms Period (220 AD to 280 AD), China was divided by three regimes: Wei (north of the Yangtze), Shu (in the southwest), and Wu (in the southeast). There were many heroes and talented rulers during this chaotic period, as the famous novel "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" depicts. Three Kingdoms Period Key Facts: Preceded by the Han Dynasty (206 BC to 220 AD); Founding Kings: Cao Pi of Wei, Liu Bei of Shu, Sun Quan of Wu; Characteristics: 60 years of separation, heroes, and battles; Followed by the Jin Dynasty (265 AD to 420 AD). The Han Empire ended with natural disasters and rebellions weakening the power of the court. In the year 208, Liu Bei got famous general Kong Ming’s or Zhuge Liang's help and united Sun Quan and Zhou Yu to defeat Cao Cao in the Battle of Red Cliff. He thereby won some territory. From 209 AD to 219 AD, Liu Bei conquered more states and expanded his territory. In 221 AD, Liu Bei established the Shu Han Kingdom at Chengdu, and ruled for two years. [www.chinaeducenter.com] Source: At the end of Han Dynasty, it was divided into three kingdoms headed by leaders Cao Cao who controlled the north of the Yangtze River known as Cao Wei; Liu Bei who controlled southwestern region known as Shu Han and Sun Quan who controlled the southeastern region known as Dong Wu. The Three Kingdoms period is one of the bloodiest periods in the history of China. A population census in the late Eastern Han Dynasty reported a population of approximately 56 million, while a population census in the early Western Jin Dynasty (after Jin reunified China) reported a population of approximately 16 million. Even taking into account the inaccuracies of these census reports, it's safe to assume that a large percentage of the population was wiped out during the constant wars waged during this period. From [Wikipedia]: The Three Kingdoms of Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu dominated China from 220 AD to 280 AD following the end of the Han dynasty. The Three Kingdoms period including the collapse of the Han was one of the most dangerous in Chinese history due to multiple plagues, widespread famines, and civil war. A nationwide census taken in year 280, following the reunification of the Three Kingdoms under the Jin showed a total of 2,459,840 households and 16,163,863 individuals which was only a fraction of the 10,677,960 households, and 56,486,856 individuals reported during the Han era. While the census may not have been particularly accurate due to a multitude of factors of the times, in the year 280, the Jin did make an attempt to account for all individuals where they could. Numerous people and affairs from the period later became Chinese legends. The most complete and influential example is the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guanzhong during the Ming dynasty. Possibly due to the popularity of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the Three Kingdoms era is one of the most well-known non-modern Chinese eras in terms of iconic characters, deeds and exploits. This is reflected in the way that fictional accounts of the Three Kingdoms, mostly based on the novel, play a significant role in East Asian popular culture. Books, television dramas, films, cartoons, anime, games, and music on the topic are still regularly produced in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, Japan, and Southeast Asia.
